Use dimensions in calculated metrics using-dimensions-in-calculated-metrics

Dimensions are available in the calculated metric builder, and can be added to any calculated metric formula to limit the new metric to a dimension or dimension value.

Hi this is Jen Lasser with Adobe Analytics Product Management. In this video, I’m going to talk to you about a feature that we’re adding to our Calculated Metric Builder, in our upcoming release. We’re introducing dimensions to the Calculated Metric Builder, to support a new function that we’re adding, which I’ll cover in a separate video called Approximate Count Distinct. Now that we have dimensions in the Calculated Metric Builder, you’ll be able to significantly simplify the workflow that you’ve traditionally used to create filtered metrics. And what I mean by that, is you’ll now be able to drag in a dimension. Drop it and create a segment, directly in the Calculated Metric Builder, preventing you from having to leave and go to the Segment Builder to do the same exact thing. So for example, if I want to create a metric for e-mail visits, I can simply drag in the dimension. I’ll get this new pop up now and I can select the Channel that I want to create a segment for and then click Done. What this will do, is create an internal segment directly in a Calculated Metric Builder, that we can then apply to any sort of metric that we want to create.
So, this is an internal segment meaning it won’t show up in your list of segments on the left rail here, but you do have the option to expand and make the segment Public, if you’d like to make it a more permanent thing, that you want to share with others. We intentionally kept this workflow very simplified. You can’t build up complex segments in this manner, but if you want to do that, you can always open up the segment and click the edit pencil, here and go back to the Segment Builder to build all the logic further. We really wanted to simplify the simple use cases of creating filtered metrics based off of a single dimension criteria. And this is just one example of the way you can do that. Another good example, would be pulling in, maybe the Pages dimension and let’s say, you want to Create a Segment for Home, so that you can create a metric for Home Page Visits. So you would be able to save this metric off, use it in your reporting and significantly simplify the steps that you took to do so. Hope you guys enjoy the new addition to the metric builder.

This feature streamlines the workflow for creating & using segments within calculated metrics.
