My name is Louis Duarte, and in this video we’re going to learn about language copies, what they are, what they are used for, and what you need in order to be able to create them. Let’s imagine that we work at the WKND Site’s organization’s headquarters in the US. And this site is currently catering to English speakers within the US and Canada. So if I go into WKND Site, US, you have a full edition of the site in English. And if you’re going to Canada structure you will have a full edition of the site in English as well. Now these two English editions of the site came from an original English edition of the site which is found under Language Masters. This is so because of the fact that the WKND organization decided to initially create the site in an English edition that would be international without any specific language content items or localizations, but rather an internationalized edition of the site that you can later reuse across different countries where you want to have an English edition, and have those editions within those countries be localized. And these by using the means of the multi site manager, because the US en the edition you have here and the Canada en Additionally you have here are both, live copies of this English edition on the Language Masters. But now let’s imagine that the WKND organization has decided that they want to start catering to French speakers within Canada. And they know that in the future, they want to also start catering to French speakers in France and Switzerland.
So they’re going to have an international site or the site is going to become more international. They’re going to reach out to other countries where French is spoken as well. And they have to somehow get an original page or an original edition of the site in French that they can reuse across those countries. Now this is where language copies come into play. Now, we already have an English edition of the site under Language Masters which we’re using. But that is just the original, we want to actually have it also in French. In order to do that, the first thing that we’re going to have to do is create the structure of this site or recreate the structure of this site in within Language Masters, okay, and then have that structure that we create translated into French.
So we’re going to have to first create a copy of the whole structure of the site that we already have in the original English or international English edition of the site and recreate that copy within Language Masters. But we’re not just going to use the copy operation from AEM, but rather, we’re going to use the Create language copy operation. And that’s going to yield a whole new structure of the site within Language Masters that has everything. But then that structure is going to be originally in English, but then we’re going to have it translated into French. And it’s going to have certain characteristics that make it a language copy.
Now, let’s imagine that we have already created that required structure that we just talked about using the language copy, create language copy operation for the French site. Now, we have the structure here, but notice that it is actually still in English, it is just a copy of the original English edition of the site, with the very important difference that at the root, we have a page that has a name, fr. You see the page node name is fr.
That is very important because this will constitute this page as the language root of this whole site. And when a site or a structure has a language root that is a page that has a name like fr, or the E or en, any name that follows ISO standards for language naming conventions, that is going to be recognized as a language root, and therefore, as the root of a whole language copy that can later be translated into a target language. In our case that is going to be French. Now, how can I know that this language copy that we just created is actually a language copy and a language copy of this English edition of the site specifically? Well, let’s have a look at what kind of relationship which these two pages I have right now. For that I’m going to select the original English language route, as you can see, and then I’m going to go into admin UI, side panel here so I go open, I can open the references rail and then going to language copies under copies. And now you can see that we have two language copies within these folder Language Masters. We have English and French. So how come English is considered a language copy even though it is itself the original, it was going to be the original language in which we created the site. Well, that’s just a basically conventional we decided in the WKND organization that this is going to be the original site in English, but its own characteristics make it a natural language copy because it has a language root, as you can see. The root page is named en, just as our newly created French edition of the site which is still in English, by the way, but we already have that structure here with our language route in, with the name fr.
So if I go into references and language copies I can see that both appear here. Now of course, if I try to click on English, nothing is going to happen, if I click on French, because the currently selected pages English, if I click on the other page, the other language copy here, I’m going to be able to compare these language copy to what would be the master. So from the perspective of English, French is a language copy. So if English is selected, French is a language copy that I can actually compare to it. If I click on this, I can now see a comparison side by side of both pages, where you can see that they’re basically still the same in terms of the actual content, the content still in English and both.
But then that’s where the actual translation is going to come into play.
In order to use the references rail, and the language copy section herein properly, we have to always select what we consider to be the original language edition of the site. In this case, we selected English, okay, and we used the references rail and then language copies. But what if French was the original language? Let’s suppose that was the case. Then in that case, I will have to select French here, and then go to references in language copies. And in this case, if I click on French, nothing will happen, but if I click on English, now I can compare English to its master, which in this case will be French. Now of course, this is not our case on the WKND reference site, because in our case, the Language Master is English and all of the other language copies are just language copies.
Now what about actually doing the translation? Now for translating your language copies, in this case, from English into French, you already have the structure, then the next step is to translate that structure into French. Now, for that you have to select the Language Master which is our English once again. And go to language copies, and then click on this check mark and select the language copies for which you want to translate. In this case I have French selected and notice here at the bottom we have these update language copies. And these will allow me to actually create a translation project, so that I can actually get this structure translated into French. This leads me to the last item that I want to cover in this video, which is the fact that you there are some prerequisites for you to be able to work with language copies. First, you have to be able to create pages and edit them within in this case Language Masters but wherever, whatever location you decide to be the location of your language copies, authors are going to have to be able to work in that location. Create, edit, delete and work in that section.
And also you’re going to have to allow your authors to work within the project section of AEM. So they’re going to have to be able to create projects here, so that they can start translations. In order to be able to, for them to be able to create projects and work with projects, they can, you can either give them permission specifically to content projects, or specific content project or you can make them part of the project administrators group, which will be a blanket permission that will give them the ability to do so. If you go here in security and ask your AEM admin to add your group of authors to these project’s administrators, then that specific group of authors is going to be able to work on projects for translation.
